Samm Bennett and Steve Gardner VIDEOS
Steve Gardner is a Tokyo-based musician of outstanding ability and genuine soul. Born and raised in Mississippi, Steve is a blues and American roots music veteran with a long and impressive history of musical friends and mentors (be sure to read his biography: the man was a friend of Sam Chatmon, among others). In recent months Samm has been working with Steve as a sometimes member of Steve's band (a rotating cast of some of Tokyo's finest American roots music players). And Steve has joined Samm for some of Samm's original material as well. The two musicians enjoy an easy-going camaraderie both on and offstage. On this page you'll find a bit of documentation of some of their work together, and the two of them look forward to much more in the same spirit.
EXTRA POINT OF INTEREST: Fans of Mississippi hill country-style blues (we're talking RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough...) will no doubt have heard the great Jessie Mae Hemphill, and will almost surely have seen the now-iconic photograph of Jessie Mae, with cigarette in one hand and pistol in the other. Well, that photo was snapped by none other than Steve Gardner. You can see it on the top page of the Jessie Mae Hemphill Foundation website. It's only one of many fine images from the hill country and delta regions of Mississippi that Stave has taken: his photography is every bit as solid and satisfying as his music. A very talented fellow all around!
