Back to the Usual Mistakes
somewhere between the shortest day
and the longest night there was one brief moment that i felt at ease you could say i felt alright but then the moon moved into Mercury or somethign like that i guess and everything went straight to hell i suppose you know the rest mama burned the pot roast papa’s disease was misdiagnosed the lord my shepherd lost sight of his flock i came to your door but forgot how to knock it was back to the usual mistakes back to the usual mistakes hey that’s the way the teacup breaks back to the usual mistakes. everything seemed pretty good the drummer was keeping the beat the midnight train to Georgia arrived and we all got what we wanted to eat but somebody said the wrong thing maybe some politician and then a whole new list of enemies declared a new war of attrition the long awaited paycheck bounced new and impossible rules were announced every smile turned into a frown the beloved old family house burned down it was back to the usual mistakes... now it’s a delicate balance we strive to keep we do our best just to stay afloat but we can’t control where the chips fall that’s how it is and that’s all she wrote things might look good for a minute but we know that ain’t gonna last just when everything’s moving steady and slow it’s gonna all start moving too fast the blues are gonna get you your best girl’s gonna quit you your roof is gonna start to leak you’ll be stuck at the party way past its peak you’ll be back to the usual mistakes...
