Samm Bennett - solo videos: songs using the stick dulcimer (diatonic)
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here. When I first started venturing from the world of percussion into the world of string instruments, I started out with an instrument called a stick dulcimer. The stick dulcimer is a relatively modern innovation, adapted from the old Appalachian "mountain" dulcimer, which is normally played resting on the player's lap. Some folk singers use them, and, notably, Joni Mitchell used to use the instrument from time to time to accompany herself.
The stick dulcimers you hear in these videos (the ones I play are the the McNally brand "Strumsticks") have the same type of diatonic fretboard as the mountain dulcimer, but with a much smaller resonating body, so it can be held and played like a guitar.
All the videos on these pages feature the diatonic-fretted stick dulcimer, which I used from 2009 until roughly 2014, when I switched to a chromatic Strumstick. Videos in which I use the chromatic version can be found at the website HERE.
