as part of "Tone Cycle Vol. 4"
at Last Waltz, Shibuya, Tokyo Yachiyo Building B1F, 2-12-13 Shibuya The Karimata-Bennett Duo, now known as the Mud Skippers, specializes in shamanistic stream-of-subconciousness improvisations that are rooted in hoodoo and Shinto, field hollers and pagan chants, overtones and rattling bones. In their improvisations they dive deep into that mysterious river of ancestral dreams, letting the undertows pull them into swirling territory that demands to be navigated only by instantaneous action. Then they come up for air in the most unexpected of places, maybe grabbing a quote from Stevie Wonder or Basho as the river carries them onward. Ever onward. Tone Cycle Vol. 4 will also feature performances by Crooked Sun (山本哲也 key,pc - ナスノミツル bs - 平松千 dr - 伏見蛍 gt) and 南方美智子 MUD SKIPPERS will play the LAST set of the evening, starting at 21:10 |
SAT 1/17 : SOLO on taishōgotoo
DIRECTIONS to ENBAN: Take the south exit of Koenji station, turn right, and walk along the train tracks towards Asagaya (tracks will be on your right). After a 2 or 3 minute walk, Enban is on your left, in a building slightly set back from the street, on the 2nd floor.

at Enban, Koenji, Tokyo
2F Gorinkan Building, 3-59-11 Koenji, Suginami-ku, Tokyo - TEL 03 5306 2937 near JR Koenji Station (Chuo/Sobu line), south exit Start - 19:00 - ¥1500 entry(includes 1 drink) For this solo set, I'll be performing on a taishōgoto, the curious Japanese string instrument which first appeared in the Taishō era (1912–1926). I'll be creating drones and sonic landscapes, sounding the strings with small battery-operated fans and vibrating devices. Probably a song or two thrown in for good measure. I may also mount a bass drum on my head if it seems necessary. Don't miss it. Also appearing: トーマス(from 伊勢) EPPAI & マサトモジャ (artists using toys and incorporating magic tricks and who knows what else!) |

FRI 1/23 : SOLO (15 minutes of fame) at Drunk Poets See God #24
at Bar Gari Gari, Ikenoue, Tokyo
(5.7 seconds from Ikenoue Station, Keio Inokashira line) open 19:00 - start 20:00 500 yen entry charge, plus 1 drink. It's the big 24th installment, the 2nd anniversary of DRUNK POETS SEE GOD, where some of Tokyo's most daring and engaging wordsmiths get on the mic and show their stuff. Hosted by by yours truly, Samm Bennett, along with singer and poet Sorcha Chisolm, this is the place to be for those who want to keep abreast of the latest in loquacious lingo! I'll be on hand (as well as other musicians, depending) to provide instantaneous musical backing to any poet who might happen to want it, and all are welcome to read, recite, intone, chant, grumble, shout or otherwise enunciate. Fun stuff, serious stuff, flights of fancy, hilarity, stream of semi-consciousness, heaping helpings of free association and extended elocution. Hooray! Come early (opens at 7pm) to sign up for a slot, if you want to get on the mic and let us hear what you got to say. Otherwise, just roll in for a drink and a listen! |
