JANUARY 2018
Live shows by Samm Bennett and his various ensembles and collaborations
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here, hope to see you at one or more of these upcoming shows!
SUN 1/14 : KING CAKE BABY - "Mardi Gras Sounds for Tokyo Town"
at Cuzn Homeground, Asakusa, Tokyo
music from 19:30 to 22:00 / entry: pass the hat!
music from 19:30 to 22:00 / entry: pass the hat!
Come on out and getcha summa that good ol' New Orleans Mardi Gras sound! If you like Dr John, Professor Longhair, the Meters, Huey "Piano" Smith and all that good stuff, well, you'll like us, cause that's what we do. King Cake Baby brings New Orleans to Tokyo! And we're very psyched to be playing, for the second time, a very cool and funky venue in wonderful, eccentric Asakusa, called Cuzn Homeground. Last time we made some joyful noise there the atmosphere was just fun and lively as all get out! A great mix of foreigners (many just passing through town, backpackers and such, staying at the nearby hostels) and Asakusa locals. And joining piano wizard Matt Gillan and I, putting the fat bottom into the Mardi Gras vibe, will be the great Jeff Curry on bass for this one. Jeff really tears it up! Don'tcha miss it, now.

Two solo sets of songs and such by local pickers and grinners Samm Bennett and Felix Sonnyboy, and... a DUO set! A world premiere! I'll have my 3-stringer, jawharps and a pig or two, and Felix, well, he might show up with a banjo, a bass ukulele, a guitar, or all of the above. At the warm, wonderful Cheshmeh, where hosts Megumi and Kelly are ready to provide you with your choice of beverage, tasty homemade food and good conversation!
We'll be PASSING THE HAT, pay as you're able!
Whether sitting on the floor or sitting at a table!
Come partake of the sounds, the food and the drink!
Come join us, my dears, and we'll all get in sync!

A special daytime event for your daytime musical needs! This will be the first time in many moons that we've cranked up the ol' Mechanical Bear, and I'm sure looking forward to improvising with Masa and Chris again. Other acts on the bill (Red Tubby & Calico, and U) are unknown to me, but expect adventurousness, I'd imagine.
Schedule:
13:00-13:30 - Mechanical Bear
13:45-14:15 - U

open 19:00 - start 19:30 / entry: ¥1500 + drink
This is a last minute addition to my January live schedule! It's a four-part bill, I'm up last (at 10PM) with a set of songs on the ol' three-stringer. This Breath place is a new venue for me, but I hear it's pretty nice, and, hey, it's right across the street from Mister Donut, so that takes care of dinner.
19:30- 20:10 Haru (w/ Hiroshi Kameda) / 20:20- 21:00 Jonny Barefoot / 21:10- 21:50 Grant Rolls / 22:00- 22:40 Samm Bennett

SUN 1/28 : SOLO songs
at Grand Arbre restaurant, Setagaya, Tokyo
Open 18:00 - Start 19:00 - Entry: PASS THE HAT!
Open 18:00 - Start 19:00 - Entry: PASS THE HAT!
I'll be performing two full sets songs about trains and gambling and whatnot at the Grand Arbre, a casual style French restaurant which has done very well with its music series, curated by my buddy and blues/folk enthusiast Jean-paul Richard. This will be my second time to play there, and I really enjoyed the first show I did there. The atmosphere is great, the food divine. The venue is located right next to Shoin-jinja-mae station on the Tokyu Setagaya line.
