MEDICINE BONE is the duo of Samm Bennett and Ken Shima whose music reflects the blues of the Mississippi Hill Country. Distinct from the better-known "Delta" and "Chicago" blues, Hill Country style has fewer chord changes and a special rhythmic drive and spirit.
Samm, on the one-string guitar (aka "diddley bow") and hand/foot percussion, lays down stomping grooves and bass lines, which along with Ken's driving guitar creates floor-shaking backbeats. Each man contributes powerful vocals.
Songs are mostly original, often borrowing from the Hill Country tradition/repertoire, as is the age-old practice of folk musicians. It's new music with a firm root. The evening will include some discussion of Hill Country musical history and a look at some of its notable exponents. Morgan Fisher will at times add his funky organ and other keyboards. Be ready for a rockin', hollerin', deeply groovy night!
IMPORTANT NOTE: As Ken Shima is returning to the USA shortly after this performance, this will be the LAST Medicine Bone show anywhere for the next year at least, and most likely for the next two years!
The location is a five-minute walk from Daitabashi Station
(just two stops from Shinjuku on the Keio Line).
Address: 2-2-4 Izumi, Suginami-ku, Tokyo 168-0063
RESERVATION IS SUGGESTED AS THE AUDIENCE IS LIMITED TO ABOUT 35 PERSONS.
Please send an email with the title "MS7" to: [email protected]
Please include your name and a callback number.
Your reservation will be confirmed and a map will be emailed to you.
But if you feel like just coming on the day without a reservation, and it's not sold out, we'll fit you in!

free entry - sets from 21:00 'til midnight
Always a big pleasure and a mighty fine time to thump the tubs with Mississippi born-and-bred Steve Gardner, a master of country blues and southern roots music.
It's a relatively big band on this night, with Hisa Nakase on bass (some of you might know him as the bass player in my New Orleans band King Cake Baby) and special guests Bill Benfield (mandolin) and Paul Cohen on harmonica. Gonna be a throwdown!
And for those who still don't know the venue, What the Dickens is, by Tokyo standards, a very spacious English-style pub, complete with a good selection of beers, ales (and Guinness) on tap and authentic British pub food (very hearty stuff).
It'll be a fun night for sure, come on over.
