Samm Bennett Tokyo Live Schedule February/March 2024
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here, extending a warm invitation to join one or more of these upcoming live music events. Support live music! It's good for you!
SUN 2/11 : King Cake Baby at What the Dickens (Ebisu)
music from 8PM til ~~? FREE entry
|
I tell you friends, you just can't keep this band DOWN! We keep comin' at'cha, cause we're on a mission, you see. From God? I dunno... but anyway, a mission: to bring that New Orleans 2nd line style R&B to Tokyo. Good for your body, good for your soul. Matt Gillan on the 88 keys, Hisa Nakase on bass, and yours truly on drums and vocals, we bring you standards from the Crescent City such as Tipitina, Mardi Gras Mambo, Iko Iko, Junco Partner and many, many more, plus tunes from outside the New Orleans R&B tradition but given a Second Line spin, if you know what I mean. One After 909, Hey Good Lookin', Kansas City, On the Road Again and others, in our hands, undergo transformations into bona fide Mardi Gras-style excursions. And we'll be bringing selections from our ever-increasing repertoire of original numbers, in the same New Orleans spirit. Did I mention New Orleans, by the way?
Fun stuff, good times guaranteed. |
THU 2/29 : THIRD PERSON at Pit Inn (Shinjuku)
Pit Inn website (English)
|
The improvising trio Third Person is BACK, in its third iteration. As of now, Third Person consists of yours truly, guitarist/daxophone player Uchihashi Kazuhisa, and, as always, a constantly changing third member. This will be the debut of the NEW Third Person. Don't miss it!
open19:00 / start 19:30
|
SAT 3/9 : King Cake Baby at Frida (Nishi Ogikubo)
music starts 19:30
|
This will be the first time for King Cake Baby to play this venue, but the place comes highly recommended and will be especially appreciated by tequila fans! Apparently the master is a tequila cognoscenti, and there is a plethora of varieties on offer there. I assume other types of beverages are available as well! A musician friend of mine here in Tokyo writes this about Frida: "Frida is a very cool tequila bar just minutes away from Nishi Ogikubo station. Good snacky-type food and an amazing selection of quality tequila (I actually wasn't aware that there was such a thing as quality tequila until I came here!)."
KCB will, as usual, be bringing the New Orleans second line sound, you know where it's at. There's a brief opening set from a songstress, followed by a 2nd act opening act which includes KCB's bass man Hisa Nakase, and if he's involved in it, I reckon they're worth hearing, and then KCB is up for a 40 minute set. |
WED 3/20 : King Cake Baby at Moon Stomp (Koenji)
music starts 19:30 - 2 (or 3?) full sets!
|
KCB always enjoys playing at Moon Stomp, a friendly little venue indeed. There's bar food and a full selection of beverages, of course, and, as ever, KCB will be bringing the New Orleans second line sound, with our interpretations of the music of Professor Longhair, Dr John, the Meters, Huey "Piano" Smith and other NOLA luminaries, plus our take on familiar tunes from outside the sphere of New Orleans music such as numbers by Willie Nelson, the Beatles, Randy Newman, pre-war blues and jug band artists... plus some originals... all somehow done up in the spirit of the SECOND LINE! Hoo nah NAY! Hope to see you there!

SAT 3/23 : Samm Bennett & Rob Moreau DUO at Lighthouse (Kokubunji)
I was delighted to play with mandolin man Rob Moreau a few months back at Lighthouse, and we had so much fun we're doing it again! I'll be on the ol' 3-stringer and vocal duties, Rob will be strumming those 8 strings on the mando, so that's 11 strings total! About enough to get the job done, we reckon. We'll be performing a mix of covers and my originals. Oh, and we love the Lighthouse, what a splendid and lively place it is, with great food, drink and wonderful people. Hope to see you there.
music starts 19:30 - 3 full sets!

SAT 3/30 : Samm Bennett & Matt Gillan DUO at Blackbird Eatery (Sasazuka)

Those of you who follow our band King Cake Baby will know that Matt is the keyboard man in that unit, but Matt is a man of many musical talents indeed, one of which is ye olde guitar. This new duo project we're embarking on will feature his guitar playing along with yours truly on percussion and vocal. Oh, and Matt will be supplying plenty of harmony vocals, too.
Opening up the evening will be singer and songwriter Sora Sato and his band, a quartet, with members Bee, Julian and Denis..Hope you'll come check out the world debut of this new duo unit, at the newly refurbished Blackbird (formerly known as Cheshmeh). Schedule:
