FRI 3/2 : TRIO - Bennett / Takaoka / Tsuzuki
at Apollo, Shimokitazawa, Tokyo admission: 500 yen bar charge open: 19:30 - start: 20:00 bar charge (entry) - 500 yen music charge: pass the hat! pay as you're able! This will be the 2nd time around for this new trio. The first gig was a great success, and we're looking forward to more: expect some blues-esque improvisations and churning urns of groove from this trio, featuring Samm on drums, vocal, etc. Daysuke Takaoka (from the Smoke Benders) on tuba and, up once again from Osaka, Baku Tsuzuki on guitar. and just in front of the "Hello Work" (Employment Bureau)
The evening starts with a set at 19:30 from Harashin & FRIENDS.
Samm's solo set will start at 20:30, followed by YUGO at 21:30 and another act to follow. Samm will play diddley bow and/or stick dulcimer and/or electric changgo and/or jew's harps, and/or possibly something else. He'll be performing his original songs plus the occasional folk classic from way back yonder in the Alabama hills or thereabouts. YUGO plays his own special brand of blues on vocal, guitar and kazoo. He's known to break out a shamisen every now and then, as well.
Big Time is accessible via JR Shinjuku, Shin-Okubo and Okubo station, Seibu Shinjuku station,
and Higashi Shinjuku station (Toei Oedo line and Fukutoshin line)

At Samm's recent duo gig with the amazing vocalist William Kotaro Tokuhisa, another amazing vocalist, namely Meri Nikula showed up and joined for an impromptu trio performance. It went so well, that the three of them are doing a trio show.
A "must attend" show for all fans of extended human vocal expression!
And note: those of you based in eastern Tokyo, here's a chance to hear a show without having to cross town!

and drummer Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, who works regularly with Jim O'Rourke and
many others. This one will probably be a bit... Smoke Benders-esque, perhaps.
Anyway, we'll see. It'll be infinitely rewarding, for sure.
And for those of you who don't know, the food at Barrelhouse is lovingly prepared and quite splendid.

This is a last minute booking, friends, so please note that it doesn't appear on the monthly printed flyer from Moon Romantic. But it IS happening! This performance
will feature the long-awaited Tokyo debut of the Little Blue Diddley Bow, a one-string wonder that harkens back to a time when men were amphibians and money grew on trees. Of course, the trees were too tall to actually get any of the money,
but what the hell did amphibians need with money anyhow?
NOTE: it's an early start time for my set: 18:30! Yes, that's 6:30 PM, folks, so please don't be late!
Following my solo set, there'll be a surf band (!), a Brazilian band and more.
