MARCH 2017 : live shows by Samm Bennett and his various ensembles
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here, hope to see you at one or more of these upcoming shows!
SAT 3/4 : SOLO
at Infinity Books, Asakusa, Tokyo
open 19:00 / start 19:30 - entry: ¥1000 + 1 drink
(Free entry after 21:00 / 21:00 以降は無料!)
I'll be playing a whole buncha new songs, plus some oldies, as part of an interesting new monthly series called "The Bridge", devoted to Tokyo-based songwriters.
The setting will be intimate and quiet enough to allow for a more nuanced degree of expression. A very different vibe, from, say, the more full-on "sing and shout over the background talking and shouting" at, say, places like What the Dickens, y'know? The lyrics will be in perfectly audible focus. There will be a full set of songs, followed by an interview segment and audience question & answer sesssion. Followed by a nice relaxed hang with good beers on tap. You might even leave there with a book, who knows? Schedule: 19:00 Bar Opens 19:30 Performance by Samm Bennett / 演奏 20:30 Q&A session with Samm / インタビュー 21:00 Drinks & Discussion / デイスカションと飲み会 |

19:00 open / 20:00 start - entry: 2000 yen + 1 drink
19:00 open / 20:00 start - entry: 2000 yen + 1 drink
The AMAZING FLYING MACHINE will take off and soar once again, friends, at Hikari No Uma, a chill, comfy little venue just seconds away from JR Okubo station (Sobu line). The band features the inspired, trance-like recitations and spontaneous poetic creations of Marcellus Nealy, who brings his formidable word-performance skills to bear over a shifting musical carpet of funky beats provided by bassist Koyu Suzuki and drummer Samm Bennett. And winding his merry melodic way through the proceedings is Mitsuru Ogata on electronically-extended flute.
If you dig the 70s-era funky-soul-jazz vibe and performance aesthetic of Gil Scott-Heron or The Last Poets, for example, you'll dig the AMAZING FLYING MACHINE. If you dig a percolating, African-esque groove or a solid pocket a la James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone, you'll dig the AMAZING FLYING MACHINE. Oh, and we'll be doing that cerrtain something that only we can do Come on over to Okubo and fly with us.
