SUN 5/18 : Bennett-Miyashita-Numa Trio - Stagecoach (Chigasaki)

This will be the first time for this particular trio to take the stage and make some joyful noise, and I'm very much looking forward to it. Drummer Naoya Numa is someone I've enjoyed playing with off and on for more than 10 years now, and for my money he is one of the groovingest drummers around Tokyo. This will be the first time for the two of us to play together in trio format with Kousuke Miyashita, a fantastic player who specializes in one of my favorite instruments, the pedal steel guitar. Pedal steel! Yeah! I'm psyched.
We'll be doing a selection of my original tunes and cover tunes, and it's happening at a venue which is new to me, the Stagecoach in Chigasaki. In fact, it'll be the first time I've been to Chigasaki as well. New player, new venue, new town... |
この特別なトリオがステージに立って楽しい音を出すのは今回が初めてで、とても楽しみだ。ドラムの沼直也は、もう10年以上一緒にプレイしている仲で、東京で最もグルーヴ感のあるドラマーの一人だ。宮下広輔は私の大好きな楽器のひとつ、ペダルスティールギターを得意とする素晴らしいプレイヤーだ。ペダル・スティール！そうなんだ！興奮してるよ。

FRI 5/23 : Samm Bennett SOLO - Oil City (Asagaya)

It's always a rockin' good time over at Oil City, where most of the audience, frankly speaking, is the other musicians on the bill! But... those folks who *have* come out to hear me there (mostly with my New Orleans R&B band King Cake Baby) have had a grand old time, cause the mood in the room is always fun and boisterous. It's a good vibe. For this one, I'll be doing a SOLO set, which will be a first for me there. Looking forward to it.
I can't say as I know any of the other three acts (all up before me), but I've heard a lotta good stuff at Oil City in the past, so there might just be some good sounds purveyed by the other participants. THU 5/29 : Bennett/Nakanishi/Sawada trio - Cafe Ethica (Kamakura)
This will be the 2nd time for me to join these two excellent musicians in a trio format. My working with Sawada Jyoji-san goes back many years, we've done all sorts of things together. Nakanishi Fumihiko-san is a more recent collaborator. They are both highly skilled players of their respective instruments (bass and guitar) and our first trio gig together (also at this Kamakura venue) was full of wonderful moments, very exciting, and I'm very much looking forward to doing this trio again.
The venue is really nice, cosy, as so many places are, but full of dedicated music fans who are there to take in the sounds. The venue master is all about the music. So, yeah, my kinda place. If you're round Kamakura way, please get yourself to this one, I guarantee good sounds.

This one's been a long time coming. I can count on one hand all the times I've shared a stage with the great Carl Stone over the years, but it's always been a treat and, I gotta say, an honor. If you know, you know: the man is one of the key forefathers of "computer music", but that's too narrow or constricting a definition. For me, more than that, he's just a damn fine creator of sonic worlds, worlds of beauty and wonder. He's a poet of sound.
