Samm Bennett: New York City and other US shows for Oct & Nov 2013
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here. It's not been too often that I've gotten back to the US over the past several years. The shows I'll be doing in New York City and elsewhere during October and November will be the first since 2007. Hope you'll drop in on one or more if you're in the neighborhood!

Samm and Billy, 1993, Brooklyn
FRI 10/25 : with Billy Martin and friends
at Roulette, Brooklyn, NY
Details here at Roulette website
I'm honored and delighted that old buddy and drummer extraordinaire Billy Martin invited me to take part in his big 50th birthday celebration concert. Billy drummed for my band Chunk back in the 90s, just before he moved on to join the renowned Medeski Martin and Wood. When Billy was drumming for Chunk, we played lots of shows in NYC, toured Europe and the US, recorded together, etc. It'll be really great to be onstage with him again!
See the Roulette page linked above for the full lineup of participants: an impressive one indeed!

SUN 10/27 : solo
music for mouth bows, jaw harps and pigs
at Downtown Music Gallery, Manhattan Chinatown
7pm - one set only - free admission
13 Monroe St (btwn Market & Catherine)
Phone: (212) 473-0043 - Toll Free: (800) 622-1387
Music schedule at DMG website
I'm saving the strumsticks and diddley bows for other shows, and focusing on songs using my beloved mouth-resonated instruments. Seems appropriate for the very intimate setting at DMG. The performance will also feature members of the High Exalted Mystic Squadron of Singing Pigs, all the way from deepest Higashi Nippori, Tokyo, making their New York City debut. They're very excited about it, and hope you'll attend.

SAT 11/2 : SOLO
at Jeff Greene's Place, TriBeCa, NYC
55 Walker St # 5A - btwn Broadway & Church St
8pm start - admission: pass the hat - pay as you're able
($100 dollar bills cheerfully accepted! But less is A-OK!)
visit the Facebook event page for further details, map to Jeff's place, etc.
I'll be doing songs with the stick dulcimer (aka strumstick), diddley bow, mouth bow, jaw harp, toys, percussion... the whole nine yards, in a salon-style concert at musician Jeff Greene's place. Jeff and I (he's a player of all manner of *exotic* instruments from round the globe) will most likely make a little noise together, as well. Should be a fun and relaxed evening, and of all the solo gigs I'm doing in New York, this one will be perhaps the best listening environment: a private home! Jeff tells me the space can comfortably accommodate 35-50 people. And some of my pigs, so that was the deciding factor. I don't play where there's no room for my pigs.
So come on up to TriBeCa, y'all!

Ned and Samm, 1984, NYC
11/19 : The BRT
trio with Ned Rothenberg and Stomu Takesihi
plus extra special guest Shelley Hirsch
at Roulette, Brooklyn, NY
General Admission: $15
Members/Students/Seniors: $10
FREE for All Access Members
Roulette website page for The BRT
Ned Rothenberg and I go waaay back to the 1980s, working together first as two thirds of the trio Semantics, and later in various other projects including Odd Job with Shelley Hirsch and David Weinstein as well as R.U.B. (a trio with guitarist Uchihashi Kazuhisa). Ned happens to be one of my very favorite horn players currently residing on the planet, and I'm really happy to have this date with the amazing Stomu Takeishi on bass. We'll be using New Orleans-esque funky beats and grooves as our launching point, so it oughtta be lotsa fun! And Shelley Hirsch, who I haven't played together with in FAR too long, is simply wonderful: a law unto herself. Not to be missed!
