Samm Bennett: solo
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here. My solo performances usually feature my song work. For me spontaneity and flexibility are of key importance, and my songs often appear in very different interpretations and instrumental settings from performance to performance.
For accompaniment, I might use use the 3-string guitar (sometimes called a strumstick), or the diddley bow (a one-string instrument straight out of the earliest reaches of musical Americana), or various jaw harps and mouth resonated string instruments like the mouth bow. I've also done solo performances with various drums like the walking drum or talking drum, udu or frame drum, or various sanza and likembe-type instruments (aka thumb pianos). I sometimes employ drones and sonic textures that I've created using analog synths or with some bowed acoustic instrument. I'll sometimes focus on using one or two instruments for an entire show, but I've also been known to use a different instrument for every song in a set. I like to keep shaking things up, to keep things fresh for myself as well as the listeners. |
