The sanza (known and referred to by many other names as well, including likembe, kalimba, mbira, thumb piano, etc) is an instrument that I've used, off and on, many years. My solo concerts sometimes feature them, and I often alters their sound, attaching a pickup to them and using effects such as distortion and pitch shifting.
