Thoughts and Prayers

it only takes a very few seconds
maybe half a minute or so
for scores of people to be mowed down
in America don’tcha know
the only nation on earth where mass murder
is somehow just accepted as a natural fact
every month or so there’s some new shooter
who wants to get in on the act

and then it’s time for thoughts and prayers
time for thoughts and prayers
just a way for the boys of the NRA
to say "who cares"
thoughts and prayers

now of course every nation has its lunatics
its violent and mentally ill
but if they can’t get their hands on high powered weapons
guess what?
it ain’t so many they’ll be able to kill
but it’s a bigger kind of mass insanity
that has a grip on the USA
the bizarre idea that virtually anyone
can own these kindsa weapons and that that’s OK

so it’s always and then it’s time for thoughts and prayers
endless thoughts and prayers
just a way for the boys of the NRA
to say "who cares"
thoughts and prayers

by now all these thoughts and prayers
must number in the billions, or you’d think they would
and you might disagree, but as far as i can tell
they ain’t doing a whole lotta good
thoughts and prayers

ah but let’s not give up hope
remember we might still just make things change
let’s say to the ones who’d let this go on and on
"this is our country, not a firing range"
no matter what the NRA would have you believe
nor the politicians that they own
the laws of the land can be rewritten, you know
they’re not forever carved in stone

and we’ll be done with these thoughts and prayers
