Samm Bennett Tokyo Live Schedule December 2023
Hello friends, Samm Bennett here, extending a warm invitation to join one or more of these upcoming live music events. Support live music! It's good for you!
WED 12/6 : Solo SONGS (opening for AIGOZ) at Hikari No Uma (Okubo)
Happy to be back at the friendly, retro (with old Japanese "snack"-style seating and tables) venue Hikari No Uma, just steps away from JR Okubo station or a very short stroll from JR Shin-Okubo station. I'll be doing a set of songs new and old, originals and covers, you know the drill. And I'll be opening for my old friend and Japan indie-rock legend Hachi Kasuga. Hachi's new band is a trio he calls AIGOZ, and they've settled on a drummer now (Hachi and his bassist already had a tight musical connection) so I'm expecting some fine music. Come hear it all!
First set, by yours truly starts 7:00pm sharp, followed by AIGOZ. Open 18:30 - Start 19:00 2500 yen + 1 drink Google map to Hikari No Uma

SAT 12/9 : Prof Bennett's House of Electro-Acoustical Mystery at Bar Isshee (Sendagi)
The Professor will be bringing stacks of 7" records from his ever-expanding collection, from which he will coax snippets of sound and shape those into rhythmic soundscapes that are at once familiar and quixotic. It's a constantly unfolding sound cornucopia, an ever-evolving kaleidoscope made up of little aural glimpses, details and slivers grabbed the long history of recorded sound. Reshaped, reshuffled, repurposed. Unexpected juxtapositions, always different, always unpredictable. You haven't heard anything quite like what the esteemed Professor Bennett has in store for your ears. Don't miss this rare appearance!

SUN 12/17 : Solo SONGS at What the Dickens (Ebisu)
This will be a full evening of original songs and cover tunes. I've been enjoying doing covers lately, and I always try to put my own spin on them, something that takes the song into some different territory. And in fact, at The Dickens especially, my recent plan of action has been to continually alternate between originals and covers, throughout the night.
Those of you who are familiar with my song work will know that I am writing new stuff all the time, so this show will feature tunes you've never heard, guaranteed! And some older tunes that, like fine wine, just get better with age! Hope you can make it! The Dickens is noted for its good variety of fresh pints on tap (plus full bar, of course) AND for its English pub food like meat pies, fish & chips, and more. music from 19:30 to 22:00 FREE entry Google map to What the Dickens

SAT 12/23 : Solo SONGS at Lighthouse (Kokubunki)
I've heard so many good things about Lighthouse, but haven't made it there as yet cause Kokubunji is pretty darned far from my neck of the woods, but I'm packing up all necessary provisions for the long journey westward, and I'm damn sure looking forward to playing this show. It'll be a special holiday event, and they'll be serving hot wine, Dutch egg nog (advocaat!) AND Christmas chickens! Yay! I'm even gonna do a few Christmas songs, whaddaya know about that? Hope to see you there!
Music from 19:00 to 22:00 No entry charge - pass the hat for the music |
FRI 12/29 : KING CAKE BABY (plus Catfish Mambo) at Hikari No Uma (Okubo)

I tell you friends, you just can't keep this band DOWN! We keep comin' at'cha, cause we're on a mission, you see. From God? I dunno... but anyway, a mission: to bring that New Orleans 2nd line style R&B to Tokyo. Good for your body, good for your soul. Matt Gillan on the 88 keys, Hisa Nakase on bass, and yours truly on drums and vocals, we bring you standards from the Crescent City such as Tipitina, Mardi Gras Mambo, Iko Iko, Junco Partner and many, many more, plus tunes from outside the New Orleans R&B tradition but given a Second Line spin, if you know what I mean. One After 909, Hey Good Lookin', Kansas City and others, in our hands, undergo transformations into bona fide Mardi Gras-style excursions. And we'll be bringing selections from our ever-increasing repertoire of original numbers, in the same New Orleans spirit. Didi I mention New Orleans, by the way?
Fun stuff, good times guaranteed. And this time around it's a double bill of New Orleans-related music: opening for KCB will be Catfish Mambo, a band devoted to the music of the legendary soprano saxophonist Sydney Bechet. It's a quartet: piano, bass, drums and (as you'd guess) soprano sax. And guess what? The bassist is none other than KCB's Hisa Nakase, who'll be doing double duty for the evening. Plenty of joyful noise for your pre-New Years Eve enjoyment, friends. Hoo nah NAY! Open 19:00 - Start 19:30 2500 yen + 1 drink King Cake Baby webpage
